Yesterday was a great day for the power of grassroots community action, a great day for social justice and great day for The Salvation Army in Stepney as we did business with the 3 men who want to be our next prime minister.We proudly took our place with 2,500 people at Westminster Central Hall at the Citizens UK General Election Assembly to ask Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg to respond to the agenda that we have worked so hard to put together along with all the other Citizens UK member organisations. We believe in the Living Wage, affordable housing, a cap on interest rates, an amnesty for undocumented migrants, an end to child detention and the strengthening of civil society - and each man pledged, if elected, to work with us on most of these demands. It was great to see The Salvation Army represented on the stage, too, with our London leader Lt Col Joan Parker taking part in a reading from the Bible and Stepney leader Captain Nick Coke talking about the CitySafe campaign. However, this is not the end - it's just another step in our ongoing work for justice and to live the prayer that Jesus taught: '...your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.'
