When the head of the UK Salvation Army came to visit recently we had a taste of historical and contemporary East End life. For the uninitiated, the Salvation Army was founded by William and Catherine Booth on Mile End Waste (now Mile End Road) in 1865. Today there is a statue of General Booth that marks the spot. Interestingly, we also discovered that the first UK headquarters of the SA was about 100 yards away on Whitechapel Road now housing a Bangladeshi curry house called Kolapata. So that's where we went for lunch when the Territorial Commander came to visit. The food was pretty good and the staff friendly. And good value too!
